A R Rehman’s Sufi song “Khwaja re Khwaja” from the Bollywood movie ‘Jodha Akbar’ is undoubtedly hymned by more lips than ever. So, modern India has witnessed a surge in the number of Sufi music listener unlike the past few decades. Typically, Sufi songs are spiritualistic in nature; a means to unite closer to God without consideration of the physical form.
The endless swirl dances and the singings are used by certain schools of thought as a means to emanate vibration that transcends one into realms of the spiritual bliss. In a nut shell, Sufi songs are compilation of poems, composed by great Islamic saints. Irrespective of the fact that some Islamic head condemns it to be the path to God, the Sufis regards it as a way to achieve salvation. 
The reed flute used by the Sufis symbolizes the soul. The hollowness of the instrument represents the human soul reaching out for the true channel.

Indian Sufi icon such as Rahat Fateh Ali Khan mastered ‘Qawalli’ under the guidance of eminent Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (who was a great Pakistani singer well known as the Emperor of Qawalli).
In the contemporary time, versatile singer Kailash Kher popularized Sufi music with hit numbers like Allah ke Bande, Teri Deewani and Saiyyan. The singer dedicates his Sufi connection to the uniqueness Sufism and to the love of God.
In a bid to increase the number of younger Sufi music fans, Mumbai-based famous singer Kavita Seth agrees to have added a slight changes in the orchestration by infusing guitar and drum kit without altering the singing style and poetry.
